What Is Sedation Dentistry
& What Are the Benefits?
Sedation dentistry uses medication to relax the body and mind. The sedation we provide at our Ballantyne, NC, dental office serving Charlotte keeps you deeply relaxed throughout your visit. As a result, you can get the care you need in total comfort.
More Efficient Procedures
Involuntary movements in the dental chair can make it difficult to provide the treatment you need. Sedation dentistry calms patients, allowing them to sit comfortably and receive efficient care.
Fewer Appointments
If you're undergoing a procedure that involves many steps, we may be able to get more done in fewer appointments with the help of sedation. When a patient is under sedation, our Ballantyne dentist can work longer and more fluidly in one dental appointment, eliminating the need for follow-up visits.
Comfortable Treatment
For our Charlotte patients, sedation dentistry makes dental care a more comfortable experience. Reducing dental anxiety through oral conscious sedation, nitrous oxide, or IV sedation can make you better able to have comfortable dental care in the future, possibly without the aid of sedation.
Improved Oral Health & Function
When you're nervous about the dentist, you may avoid treatment for months or even years. Our compassionate dentist uses sedation dentistry to make it easier for patients to receive the treatments they require to prevent future problems.
Choose From 3 Types of Sedation
Other Ballantyne practices may offer just one or two types of sedation. We provide three, so that we can better tailor care to your exact case. Our skilled dentist can help determine if sedation would be an appropriate accommodation during your next dental treatment.

Nitrous Oxide
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a calming gas inhaled through a mask placed over your nose. It's the lightest sedative we offer. It is fast-acting and takes effect shortly after our dentist begins the flow of nitrous oxide. It also wears off quickly following your dental procedure, so you can safely drive yourself home about 15 minutes after the nitrous oxide mask is removed.

Oral Conscious Sedation
Oral conscious sedation provides deeper relaxation than nitrous oxide. With this form of sedation, you'll be given a prescription for a pill that you'll take about an hour before coming to our office to give the sedative time to take effect. You'll need someone to drive you to and from your appointment.

IV Sedation
Like our other forms of dental sedation, intravenous (IV) sedation induces deep relaxation, but not total unconsciousness. It is unique because it can be adjusted throughout your procedure to achieve the level of relaxation you need. At our practice, an anesthesiologist will monitor you throughout your procedure to ensure your safety.

FAQ About Sedation Dentistry in Ballantyne, NC
Will I be completely asleep during my procedure?
Not in most cases. With nitrous oxide and oral sedation, you remain conscious but deeply relaxed. Many patients describe it as a dreamlike state. IV sedation can produce a deeper level of relaxation where you may not remember much of the procedure, but you're still able to respond to your dentist. However, some patients become so comfortable under sedation that they fall asleep in the dental chair.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
Yes. When administered by a trained dental professional, sedation is very safe. Your dentist will review your full medical history beforehand to ensure you’re a good candidate before proceeding. If you’re receiving IV sedation, we will have an anesthesiologist monitor your vitals throughout your procedure.
How long does it take to recover from dental sedation?
Recovery depends on the type of sedation used. Nitrous oxide wears off within minutes, and you can usually drive yourself home. Oral conscious sedation and IV sedation take longer to fade from your system, so you’ll need to arrange for someone to drive you home from your appointment, as you'll feel drowsy for several hours. Most patients feel back to normal by the following day.
